Submissions
NLG is seeking original, unpublished works by writers who are citizens of the indigenous nations of North America and Hawai'i. We publish in all genres: poetry, fiction (short stories but also novel excerpts if self-contained), creative nonfiction, drama and mixed-genre/media. We are seeking works that extend this body of literature by avoiding cliché and trite conventions through risk-taking and experimentation, but also through distinctive and engaging voices, exciting and innovative approaches to storytelling.
Please submit your work as an attachment to an email message addressed to:
Submissions@nativeliteratures.com
Submissions are limited to three poems, one short story (or novel excerpt), one creative nonfiction essay, or interrelated scenes of complete plays. Authors may submit in more than one genre.
We prefer manuscripts be in MS Word or Rich Text format, but will work with other programs if no other option is available.
Currently, we are publishing works in English, but we hope to be able to expand this in the future, perhaps with works completely in indigenous languages.
All work accepted for publication will remain on the site for three months; at that time, all work and rights revert to the author. The authors will have free and full access to the site for the duration of the issue in which their work appears. After that, full access is available through the annual subscription rate, which is $25 for the inaugural year. Contributors who are subscribers are eligible to apply for funds in support of their careers. The scholarship program will be initiated once funds have become available.
